On February 15, 1811 Artigas deserted the English forces to fold the movement of the revolutionary junta in Buenos Aires. Everyone knew that his support was crucial to stir up the eastern campaign. For the English commander Salazar, Artigas was "the whole campaign coquito," thus alluding to his leadership. The same assured Mariano Moreno in its Plan of Operations, strongly recommended to obtain their support for the revolutionary cause.Buenos Aires Board had received with great satisfaction, giving him the rank of Lieutenant General and giving support to organize the forces. Aware of the armed uprising that had begun formal uprising in the eastern campaign, Artigas back immediately and set up his headquarters Mercedes general. From there lead the April 11 first public proclamation.

His words confirm the strength of his call and his gifts as leader. "Union, expensive countrymen, and be assured of victory. (...) ... And shake those tyrants have aroused your anger, not realizing that the South Americans are willing to defend their homeland, and dying with honor, than live with shame in shameful captivity.
No anachronisms and from contextualized reading of documentary sources, the best way to remember these events is to delve into the precise meaning of concepts and words used at that time, in order to recover the contingency history of men and their commitments.
